Strand 01: SEND, Support and Safeguarding ROOM 227 | 10:00 to 10:45

Ginny Bootman, Senior Manager and SENCO, Boddington CE Primary Academy

This visual session looks at how empathy is such a strong tool in understanding children and helping them feel safe, secure and valued in their settings.

It will be underpinned by research led by clinical psychologists which was initially undertaken regarding Looked After Children to help schools understand their complex needs.

The session will highlight that empathy is very different to sympathy and will really unpick how this can be used in school settings. A few carefully chosen words to a child can make a huge impact as to how they feel about themselves.

Participants will find out how this simple, practical approach can easily be used in their own setting and they will go away with a wealth of practical strategies to use and share with colleagues.
