This session will share details of the START project and give participants the chance to reflect on their own transition arrangements. The START Project is a 30-month-long joint international research project with three other countries in Europe (Italy, Belgium and Slovenia), funded by Erasmus. The project focuses on how pre-school children experience their transitions from their early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings into Reception classes in primary schools. There is also a strong focus on understanding how parents/carers and families experience their children’s transitions along with the perspectives of practitioners and Reception class teachers. The Project takes as a given that this is an important, and for some children a critical, set of changes in their lives and the underpinning intention of the Project teams is to develop more sophisticated understandings of how young children’s transitions can be more effectively supported in practice.
