The session will start with an activity that directly demonstrates the inefficiency of a solely verbal explanation. After a discussion on the significance of this experience, we will dissect it in terms of Paivio’s dual coding theory and elaborate further with reference to evidence. In tune with the recent rediscovery of cognitive science, we’ll touch on the positive consequences of recognising the biological constraints faced by novice learners — and the influence this has on designing lessons to build schema in children’s minds
