Strand 06: Behaviour ROOM 126 | 10:45 to 11:30

Penny Ruth Willis and Hayley Singlehurst-Mooney

Many educators are becoming clearer regarding both the neuroscience of trauma and the limitations of reward and punishment-based behaviour modification strategies. The implications of these insights on disciplinary strategy are huge, yet pragmatic guidance on effective and ethical alternatives to ‘old authority’ responses is hard to find.

Nonviolent Resistance (NVR) might provide this guidance – a framework upon which many excellent trauma-informed/relationally-focussed principles and practices can hang.

Penny and Hayley will discuss the application of the principles of Nonviolent Resistance within the classroom, the school culture, and the broader community – with a particular focus on family engagement and the establishment of credible authority.
