The creative economy accounts for 1 in 11 jobs in the UK. In 2016 the sector contributed £91.8bn Gross Value Added, which was bigger than the automotive, life sciences, aerospace, oil and gas sectors combined. At Screen Northants, a social enterprise film company, we work with young people to provide industry experience to support those considering a career in the Creative Industries as well as working with disadvantaged young people to build confidence, skills and pride. The young people coming through our door have said they are often discouraged from studying creative subjects and we’re also worried about a trend of low aspirations in Northants that we’re seeing. This session will explore the perceptions of the Creative Industries in Education, Northamptonshire’s potential as a hub for the Creative Industries, and how we can best equip our young people with the creative skills needed by all sectors of our economy.
